As promised in yesterdays post, I will include some photos of the Daly Waters Road House, below. The roadhouse has a lot of accommodation, at least 60 rooms in addition to a caravan park. Perhaps the most interesting (or unique) feature of the roadhouse is the wrecked aeroplane.
To get some photos of the Daly Waters Pub I had to backtrack a few kilometers north. The pub and its associated caravan park is more than a little bit quirky, but that seems to work in terms of attracting tourists to come and spend their money.
In addition to the pub I paid a quick visit to the old WWII air field which is still in operation.
Then it was time to get started on the days journey, which was to follow the Carpentaria Highway to the junction with the Tablelands Highway. At the junction there is a roadhouse and the junction is variously known as Cape Crawford, McArthur, or Heartbreak Hotel on different maps. I dont understand about the various names. Early in the days travel I came across this pond which was hosting a lot of bird life and I used it as a rest area. While there I noticed that the bike had been hit by various colouring agents during the ride.
The miles (or is it kms) passed by and so did well separated rest areas.
When I need a break and there is no rest area I pick a random spot, often a turnoff into a property, like this one.
Each of the formal rest areas had a tank of non-drinkable water and in each case travellers had filled small bowls with water for the local birds. I managed to catch the birds drinking at one of them.
The early part of the higwhay was well made 2-lane road in good condition. But eventually that turned into a single lane of sealed road where oncoming traffic had to use part of the gravel/dirt verge to pass each other.
In addition there was extensive upgrading of the narrow sections underway. These sections of roadwork were bypassed using temporary gravel roads.
At the junction between the Carpentaria and Tablelands Highways I discovered that the road house is officially called Heartbreak Hotel. It is a pleasant place, grassed grounds, big trees for shade, with fuel, accommodation, food, and helicopter rides available.
I fueled up at Heartbreak filling my tank to the very brim. From this point the next fuel is 375km away down the Tablelands Highway.
I had identified, using Wikicamps, a possible camping spot about 30km down the Tablelands Highway.
