I could have called this post familiar territory as Nina and I have travelled the road south from Katherine a few times and are now familiar with the tourist stops along the way. The first one is Mataranka about 100km south. It is famous for its pools of blue fresh water that make great swimming holes for locals and visitors.
Not far south of Mataranka is a short detour left/east which takes one to the Elsey Cemetery and a little bit father along that same road is the original site of the Elsey Homestead. Elsey was a cattle station in the early 1900s that was the setting for the novel We of the Never Never by Jeannie Gunn.
Next comes Larimah which in recent years has become somewhat famous or at least well known because of the TV Documentary called Last Stop Larimah about the disappearance of Paddy Moriarty.
It is also well known for its Pink Panther hotel and was an air base during WWII.
My goal today was to get to a place called Daly Waters which is a little west of the Stuart Highway. It was another airbase during WWII and is now a necessary stop for grey-nomads on their tour of Australia.
However when I got to Daly Waters the camping ground was packed so rather than wait around to find I could not stay there the night I got back on the highway and went 5km farther south to Daly Waters Road House which is far less trendy and got my self a room.
I will post some photos of Daly Waters Pub and the Roadhouse in tomorrows post.
