Another day in Singapore and we had scheduled an outting called "Round The Island Tour". This was a bus tour that stopped a number of times at locations, designed to give us a flavour of life in Singapore. In order these stops were:

  • a Buddhist Temple,

  • a "wet market" which really was a local open air market known for its good supply of fresh seafood,

  • lunch at Beaulieu House in Sembawang Park where there was a clear view of Malaysian territory across the Straits of Johor

  • Kranji War Cemetery. This is located on the site of a prison that housed local people and allied soldiers during the Japanese occupation during WWII. Allied soldiers from many British Empire countries as well as many local Singapore locals are buried here.

  • We visisted a public housing "town". This is a collection of hi-rise appartment buildings that are built by the government and then sold to locals on favourable terms. The point of this visit was to demonstrate the efforts being made to make such neighbor-hoods into a cummunity and provide facilities locally. One of the interesting facts of the day is that home ownership in Singapore is about 90% and 80% of people live in public housing.

  • It was a good day but there was a lot of information to absorb.
