This morning in Seward the sun was out, and the broken clouds had lifted above the tops of the surrounding mountains. A beautiful setting.

After picking up our repaired tire we headed up a side road to Exit Glacier about 8 miles from the Seward highway. The road goes to a parking lot about a mile from the toe of the glacier. We spent a pleasant hour walking across the river bed to the glacier, and climbed on it only enough to get a photograph. It has contracted a lot over the last 150 years, this was demonstrated by a series of signs showing where the toe was at various dates since 1830.

The drive back along the Seward Highway was pleasant with wonderful views of mountains and lakes, then onto the road towards Soldotna where we spent some time connected to wifi in another Safeway store. I was trying to organize to buy two new tires for the vehicle, but because it is 4x4 the tires shops won't sell me 2 of a different type of tire and none of them have the current tires in stock. Not sure what I am going to do.

From Soldotna we drove out along the western shore of Cook Inlet on the Kenai Spur Road to Captain Cook State Recreation Area to camp, but found the camping ground closed. Mind you the campground hosts are already in residence but the ground is closed - I dont get it. Not to worry, we parked in the picnic area, started a fire and set about the evenings activities. From the picnic ground we were looking directly west across Gompertz Channel towards the Chigmit Mountains in the Aleutian Range - it made for a wonderful sunset.

To the south west we could see Mt Redoubt - the volcano that erupted recently - there is smoke and steam billowing from its summit.

I had a long chat with a fellow named Chuck who came by at one point to walk his dog. Turned out he is a radio ham and he spent some time giving me the frequencies for the local ham radio repeaters.
